Two Chinese nationals arrested at BIA
Two Chinese nationals have been apprehended at the Bandaranaike
International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake while attempting to smuggle
foreign cigarettes worth Rs 2.2 million into the country.
The male passengers, aged 32 and 36, had arrived from China by flight UL 881 at 2.00 a.m. on Saturday (6) and were apprehended by customs officers with 220 cartons (44,000 cigarettes) of Chinese-made cigarettes.
The two suspects were warned and released without a penalty after forfeiting the cigarettes, the customs spokesman said.
